Silent Book Club Harare Turns 1

Updated: 29 minutes ago

// One year in, 800+ members strong, and we're just getting started //

Wassup fam. Hope you're all well. We've got some exciting news, and honestly, we've been waiting to say this for a while now. Silent Book Club Harare is turning ONE this Saturday, and we are not letting this one slide by quietly. Well, actually... we kind of are. Because that's what we do. But you get the point. From 20 People on a Lawn to 1 of Zimbabwe's Fastest-Growing Reading Communities

Cast your mind back to March 2025. Twenty people showed up to the very first Silent Book Club Harare meetup at Ela the Garden (Katikitiki Space), books in hand, not entirely sure what to expect. Fast forward twelve months, and we've just crossed 800 registered members, hit 600+ on our WhatsApp community, grown our Facebook group to 500 members, and pulled our biggest single event crowd yet at 130 people in one venue.

What started as Zimbabwe's first SBC chapter has become something genuinely special, and we mean that. This isn't just a book club. It's an experience where solitude meets community, and books become icebreakers.

So, What Exactly Is Silent Book Club?

Good question, especially if you're new here. Silent Book Club is a global movement, and Harare has its own chapter, proudly presented by us (The Radioactive Blog) and hosted by Thuthukani Ndlovu (TK). Here's how it works: you bring whatever book you're currently reading, show up, find a spot, and read (in silence). No assigned reading. No book report. No pressure. Just you, your book, and a room full of fellow readers doing exactly the same thing.

The Anniversary Event: Here's What's Going Down

This Saturday, we're hosting our 14th event and we're doing it big at Moto Republik in Belgravia. We already have over 200 registrations and we're expecting our biggest turnout ever. If you've been thinking about coming, this is the one!

Here's what makes this event extra special:

  1. Win a $100 Bookstore Voucher

We're introducing a raffle competition for our anniversary, and one lucky attendee will walk away with a $100 bookstore voucher. To enter, all you need to do is purchase at least one SBC Harare Anniversary bookmark at the event. Bookmarks will be on sale from 1PM to 3PM, and you can buy as many as you like. More bookmarks means more entries, which means better chances of winning. The winner gets announced at 3:30PM during our group photo. You really do not want to miss that moment.

  2. Brands, Bookstores and More:

We'll also have some exciting brands exhibiting on the day, from bookstores showcasing their latest stock to publishing opportunities and even health check services. There's genuinely something for everyone, whether you're a seasoned reader or someone who hasn't picked up a book in years but is curious about what the fuss is all about.

  3. Food, Drinks and Good Vibes: Moto Republik will have their bar open with drinks and food (Boerewors rolls) available throughout the event. Their menu is affordable and worth supporting, so come hungry and come thirsty. The venue has plenty of lawn space, but seating is limited, so please bring a cushion, picnic blanket or camping chair. Trust us on this one. There's also nothing wrong with sitting directly on the lawn.

We're Growing Across Zimbabwe and Beyond

Here's something that genuinely makes us proud. SBC Harare may have been the first chapter in Zimbabwe, but it is no longer the only one. Chapters have now launched in Bulawayo (@SBCSkyz) and Chinhoyi, and both communities will be holding their own events this very weekend. They're still finding their feet, but we are so excited to watch them grow. We've also had the opportunity to assist Namibia (@SBCRundu) in preparing to launch their very first SBC chapter. The reading culture is spreading, and that is something worth celebrating. You can find out more info about these chapters on the posters below.

Register Now, It's Free!

We've said it before and we'll say it again. Registration is completely free, but spots are going fast. We already have 200+ people registered, and this is shaping up to be our biggest event yet. Don't be the person who finds out on Sunday that they missed it.

See you at Moto Republik this Saturday. Bring your book. Bring a friend. Bring a blanket.

A Big Thank You

None of this happens without people. A huge thank you to our partners TPT Consultancy and JSNZ (Journalism Students Network Zimbabwe) for their continued support, to every volunteer who has shown up and kept things running smoothly behind the scenes, to every venue that has opened its doors to our community, and to SBC Headquarters for the opportunity, the guidance, and the trust.

But most importantly, thank you to every single person who has attended even one event. And a special shoutout to those who have been with us since day one. You are the reason we're still here, still growing, and still reading.

Here's to year two.
